Questions, answered.

Working with us
What do you actually do?
We design and engineer homes and renovations. You leave with a Build Ready package: permit-ready drawings stamped by our engineer, plus a material take-off.
Do you build it too?
No, you choose your builder. We can recommend contractors we trust, check the work through Build Assurance, or manage the build on request, depending on the scope.
What happens at the first consultation?
An hour at the studio, free and with no obligation. You'll leave knowing which package fits and roughly what it will cost.
How long does it take?
Typically 3 weeks for one room, 4–6 for a kitchen, 6–8 for an addition and 10–12 for a new home.
Where do you work?
Winnipeg and the surrounding communities. Visits beyond the Perimeter carry a small travel fee.
Do you run workshops?
Yes. Small, hands-on sessions with hand tools, starting in the new year. Sign-ups open November 19th on our Community page.
Pricing
How is the fee set?
One flat fee for a defined scope, quoted in writing before we start. Never hourly.
Can anything change the fee?
Only your project's size and any structural work, and both are confirmed in writing before we draw. Add-ons, permit fees and changes you ask for are always approved by you first.
How do payments work?
For design packages, 75% when you sign and 25% at handoff.

Engineering and old houses
Is the engineering really in-house?
As in-house as it gets. Our engineers operate under their own firm, Building Alternatives, but work exclusively with us. They stamp the same drawings we draw.
What’s the difference between a character home and a heritage home?
A character home is simply old. A heritage home is listed by the City or sits in a conservation district, which brings extra permits and sometimes grants.
During the build
What is Build Assurance?
Independent site visits at the key stages of your build. We check the work against your drawings and the code, and send a written report with photos within two business days.
I’m a contractor. Do you work with builders?
Yes. Contractor packages give you stamped, permit-ready drawings at contractor rates, and we never bid your work. See our For Contractors page.
